FOUNDER Clan Campbell Society (USA), CCSUSA Past Executive Secretary and Treasurer, Past Newsletter Editor

Bobby Blackburn Thompson, Ph.D. professionally known as "Dr. B. Blackburn Thompson", was one of the Founding members and officers of the Clan Campbell Society (USA) in July 1972 at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in Linville, NC. Dr. Thompson was the Chairman of the Organizing Committee that was formed at that meeting. "The function ....to study successes and failures of established or past clan societies and to consider any ideas which may be of value to the Clan Campbell Society of the U.S.A., and then to prepare a constitution and statement of purpose." The committee would make a report "at the next annual meeting, planned for Saturday July 9 14th, 1973, at the same location; at this occasion the Society will become formally organized.

The following year, Dr. Thompson was elected the first Executive Secretary and Treasurer of the Clan Campbell Society (USA). As Executive Secretary and Treasurer, Bobby was also responsible collecting membership dues, maintaining all membership related paperwork and sending out the renewal notices for all members. The Society grew from a handful in 1972 to hundreds by the end of his term. Given that everything was processed by hand and in the U.S. Mail in those pre-computer days, a substantial job. He was instrumental in the early planning, organization and development starting in 1972 and during the formative years of the Clan Campbell Society (USA). His valuable organization skills can not be underestimated to the success of the Clan Campbell Society (USA).

He also helped to negotiate the merger between the Clan Campbell Society (USA) and The Clan Campbell Society of the United States of America, an organization begun in January 1974 by Lady Jean Campbell, sister of Mac Cailein Mor, and several Campbells of New York. This Campbell organization was backed by Mac Cailein Mor.

Regrettably due to professional demands as a full time medical professor at a major university, Dr. Thompson was unable to maintain an active role in the Clan Campbell Society (USA) at the end of his term as Executive Secretary and Treasurer, and as the Newsletter Editor in 1975. Dr. Thompson also suffered a great personal loss with the death of his wife Bobbie in 1976.

However, his contributions in those first years were critical to the structure and future of the Clan Campbell Society (USA) as an organization.
